Monmouth's King Rice suspended 1 game for criticizing refs
Monmouth head coach King Rice speaks with an official in the second half of Monmouth's 83-59 loss to Charleston in the Coastal Athletic Association tournament, Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington, DC. Monmouth men's basketball coach King Rice will serve a one-game league suspension on Thursday after making disparaging comments about a referee last season.
The Coastal Athletic Association suspended Rice for the Hawks' CAA season opener at home against Stony Brook in West Long Branch, N.J.
Rice, 56, violated the conference's sportsmanship policy with his postgame comments after Monmouth's season-ending 83-59 loss to Charleston at the CAA tournament on March 10, 2024 in Washington, D.C.
Assistant coach Clive Bentick will take over coaching duties for the Hawks (2-11) against the visiting Seawolves (4-9).
Rice, who played point guard at North Carolina from 1987-91, has been the head coach at Monmouth since 2011 and has compiled an overall record of 209-219.
